The PSP is an excellent portable video player but it's a pity to see many PSP owners convert their video at really awful quality. To fully harness PSP video playback capability, this short guide will show you how to convert high quality PSP video at its native resolution 480x272 with silky smooth 60fps (depending on source) using TMPGEnc 4 Xpress.

Sample K-On! ED Don't say "lazy" live by "SCANDAL" PSP 60fps video below

In order to get a 60fps (or 59.94fps) video output, you will need the source file to be a 60fps (or 59.94fps) video. 60fps videos are rarely found on files shared on the internet. MKV, AVI, RMVB and MP4 files are normally encoded in 24fps or 30fps at most, including Blu-ray rip. The common format that could be output with 60fps result is MPEG TS file with .TS extension (despite most being detected at 30fps). If you have these files on your hard drive, use them for this guide.

For this guide, the source file used is an MP4 format video, a live performance of SCANDAL singing "Don't say lazy" from K-On! running at 59.94fps, as detected by TMPGEnc below.

Converting 60fps PSP video

TMPGEnc might seem to have complicated configuration for beginners but all you actually need to do is download and save this preset file (unzip it) and follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Launch TMPGEnc 4 Xpress

Step 2: Click "Start a new project".

Step 3: Click "Add file" select the source video file (you may edit your video).

Step 4: Click "Format" and you'll be prompt to select a preset. Browse for the file "PSPAVC60fps.txp4e" you have just downloaded and unzipped.

Step 5: On the Format window, you should see that all the parameters have been properly configured for PSP. However if the source video you selected above is NOT 60fps or 59.94fps, you might want to change the Framerate settings (see below) to match that of the source file to reduce the output filesize. You might also want to experiment with the "Rate control mode" for different video quality.

*Note: If you are converting anime MKV or AVI to PSP video, it is suggested that you use 24fps.

Step 6: Click "Encode" and "Start encode" icon to begin converting.

Step 7: Copy the encoded files (you should find 2 files with .MP4 and .THM extensions) to your PSP memory stick "VIDEO" folder.

Step 8: Enjoy the high quality 60fps MP4 AVC video on your PSP!

Omake:
Sample these 25-second "Don't say lazy" 60fps and 30fps PSP video to see the difference.
